Honeymoon in Greece in June?

We are getting married the end of June on CA's central coast and are really excited for a 3 week honeymoon abroad - we are set on Greece, but we haven't yet done our homework as far as planning goes. We both love to travel (used Rick's books a few times) and adventure, but we'd also enjoy some time of quiet relaxation and beach lounging for our honeymoon. I wanted to ask if anyone had honeymoon experience in Greece - what islands to visit? What areas to stay away from? Places to stay? Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated!

I did not honeymoon in Greece but think it would be an awesome place to do so. Lots of beaches and resorts on the islands and plenty of culture, history and architecture to mix in on the mainland. June will be hot but not quite unbareable yet and the European holiday rush won't start until late June/early July. Not to mention great food and drink. And 3 weeks would be a good amount to spend. I'll add Matt Barrett's website (www.greektravel.com) for lots of great information on Greece. If you do decide to go, come back when you have some specific questions and hopefully we can help.

Please do your homework first before asking questions. You need the best comprehensive source of information with which to begin your research. It would be to your distinct advantage to acquire a good guidebook to the islands. From this you can make intelligent decisions as to which islands you prefer based on what you learn and how you prefer to spend your time. We don't know you. Come back with questions pertaining to those decisions. I suggest T. Cook's "Greek Island Hopping" for starters, or perhaps the most current Fodor's Greek Guide. Steve's take on Greece is not as helpful as these other guides. Another excellent source for information is the TripAdvisor website where you can find hotel reviews as well as designated experts for each island that will help you with the details. When it comes to hotel recommendations please include your dates of travel, which village you prefer, and your maximum daily room budget expressed in euro, not adjectives such as 'reasonable' or 'affordable', or by 'star' rating.

While I appreciate your book recommendations, I'm not necessarily asking for someone to plan out the details of my trip. I'm reaching out to anyone who has had good and bad experiences on a honeymoon in Greece. I'd like to learn from any advice they may have.

Brent, I am going to go out on a limb here- i did not honeymoon in Greece. However, I did go to Rio, Brazil. Nothing similar to Greece there except for beaches! haha. Seriously though, the only advice I could give is to make sure that you give time to relax on the beach and not move around too much. With three weeks though, you should easily be able to spend time in the cities, islands, and maybe even a quick trip to Turkey. On our honeymoon we made a habit to tour half a day and relax the other half, which worked out very nice. I have however, been to both Greece and Turkey several times, so if you do want specific advice on places, PM me.

If I were planning a honeymoon to Greece, this is what I would do. I'd fly into Athens and then directly on to Santorini. This spectacular island is a little expensive, but I'd splurge on a nice hotel here. I'd ask my hotel to arrange a taxi to the airport in Santorini ... there's nothing like walking out of the airport after that long series of flights and seeing someone holding up a sign with your name on it! I'd stay on Santorini for 4-5 nights, then would island-hop, by ferry, back to Athens. I'd pick 3 islands in the Cyclades ... to simplify ferry connections, I'd do three in the same sub-group (i.e Cyclades West = maybe Folegandros, Milos, Sifnos or Cyclades Central = maybe Ios, Paros, Naxos). This is where you can do the research, to see which of these island groupings, and specific islands, appeal the most. I'd stay on each island for 4 nights. These islands are more budget-friendly and less touristy than Santorini. Some offer interesting day trips (i.e. from Paros or Naxos to Delos). Then I'd return to Athens for the remainder of the time, maybe taking a day-trip to Delphi and/or Hydra. I would make flight reservations to/from Athens and from Athens to Santorini fairly quickly, and probably reserve the Santorini hotel fairly soon as well. You could then spend a little more time researching the other islands. You would want to reserve lodging in advance but I think you could arrange your ferry connections once you arrive in Santorini. Again, this is just one person's opinion, but at least it's a starting place for you. I think it would be a lovely honeymoon, and that you are very lucky to be able to start your lives together with a trip like this.
