Help with Turkey Itinerary

Posted a similar request a few months ago. We're now trying to refine our itinerary and have made some changes but still have doubts. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Itinerary 1: Istanbul, 6 or 7 nights Selcuk, 3 Fethiye,1 Patara, 2 Cirali,2 Antalya,1 or 2 Overnight bus,1 Goreme,3 Istanbul,1 Itinerary 2 is essentialy the same but starts in Selcuk and saves Istanbul for the end. Guess we could also have Itinerary 3 and start in Goreme and end in Istanbul but logistically that seems less workable.
Thanks for any suggestions.

It looks doable and quite relaxed to me. Will you have a car or be traveling by bus? Are you flying to Izmir to get to Selcuk? If you won't have a car you've probably got one more day then you need in Selcuk. You might consider looking into flying from Antalya to Kayseri and renting a car. If airfares are too high, look into getting a car when you arrive in Goreme. Cappadocia has lots of interesting sites that are easy to visit if you have a car. Add another day to Goreme if you have a car. You might consider spliting your Istanbul days between the beginning and end to bookend your trip. That will break up your city stay and allow you to stay in a different part of town. No matter what I'd start and end in Istanbul simply because you'll be flying into and out of there. Good luck.

Hi, Carol:
We were in Turkey 7 months ago. It is a great country to visit. Depending on your particular interests, Turkey offers many interesting possibilities. I notice your itinerary of Fethiye, Patara and Cirali all have very good beaches. Patara also has the Roman Theater and necropolis. Cirali is in Antalya Province, which has many great sites. Goreme's cave city has few equal in the world. Istanbul is a great city; it offers much in way of beauty, culture and food. Take a dinner cruise of the Bosphorus. We were in istanbul for 3 days; that seemed to be enough for us. (we're not much interested in night life) You may want to visit Capadocia as well. Bon Voyage!

Hi Carol For our month in Turkey last Sept we spent 7 days in Istanbul but broke it up by spending the first 2 days there and then our last 5 days. It worked well for us.
You might consider flying Turkish Airlines to Kayseri, renting a car and staying in Goreme and then either driving or take the bus to Antalya and then drive up the coast. We skipped Fethiye but stayed at all of your other locations. You can drop the car at Izmir and catch a cheap flight to Istanbul.

Thanks for your replies. It makes sense to split Istanbul because of the flight times. We had planned to rent a car in Fethiye but thanks to your responses are now thinking of getting it either in Izmir or Kayseri. Although we've driven in France and Portugal and felt comfortable, the language barrier in Turkey would be greater, but the advantage of a car over bus scheduling and the ability to see more makes it more attractive. Thanks again for your suggestions!

That looks like a great itinerary! I do think I'd have more days in Istanbul on the end. I'd recommend staying in Kas rather than Patara. Take a look at my reply to the "Honeymooning in Turkey" post. I'd give you some of the same ideas. Why 3 nights in Selcuk. I might do 2 nights there and 1 in Dalyan. I loved Dalyan. When we drove from Bodrum to Antalya, here's what we did at the suggestions of a tour guide we trust. 1 night in Dalyan 1 night in Fethiye 1 night in Kas 2 nights in Cirali It was definitely enough time, but more could have been nice too! Other places we went along the way were:Iztuzu beach (nice, but not a must), Oludeniz, Kayakoy, Saklikent Gorge (white slot canyon), Bezirgen (I loved this little town - no tourist but us), Arykanda, Phaselis. We also stopped at Myra (I think the other ruins were better; it's not a must do). Make sure to have the Rick Steve's guidebook for Istanbul and do the Grand Bazaar tour and some of the other walks.
(The guide that I referred to trusting is Lale Surman - the author of that book.) Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for your reply to me and to Honeymoon. Well our itinerary has changed again thanks to Steve and Rob's replies to my questions and also Stephanie's Honeymoon question. We're planning to rent a car in Izmir and drop it in Kayseri. We added Pamukalle and dropped Fethiye. We'll probably get to Selcuk in the afternoon and need one day for Ephesus and one for Sirince and other near towns. Or maybe not? Will check out Kas and some of your other suggestions for stops along the way. Where would we be without all the help from our fellow travellers? Thanks!!
