Help with Greece

We will be in Mykonos, Santorini, and Katakolon, Greece for one day each near the end of September. (Wish there was a Rick Steves book on Greece.) Any suggestions on how to make the most of these stops. Thanks in advance.

I gather Foster City is in the USA -- but you have such a Continental Name!! Flor, what you will do in each port depends on your interest in ancient history & sites, and whether u want to spend the $$$ on pricey ship-sponsored tours. Katakolon is the port for OLYMPIA. If u are well-versed & have a good guidebook, you can D-I-Y. OR share a taxi to the site & pick up a guide THERE--it will be less.

Off Mykonos is the famous isle of DELOS. You can "d-i-y" or book a tour at the harbor. If your boat comes in the afternoon u have to book the ship's tour in order to get to Delos. OR you can blow off the ancient site altogether and just wander the quaint mazey lanes and shop for jewelry & crafts which is what a lot of cruise folk do.

In Santorini the ancient site is closed. BUT there's an EXCELLENt Museum and the NOkomos conf. centr with fab exhibit on the "dig". OR--just shop & cafe-sit. WARNING- many cruises only stop 3-4 hrs there. THey do not dock at a quay and it may take u an hour to get ashore via launch & cable-car to top of cliff. Allow enough time to return! I have seen looong lines of tired cruisers standing waiting to board cable-car and again on inadequate launch provided by ship.

These brief stops will only be a tantalizing taste of Greece and not a chance to encounter Greeks aside from shopkeepers -- but it will show you lovely landscapes and, I hope, inspire u to come back when you can actually stay on an island a few days, relax, and experience the culture and the people as well. Enjoy your Greece "sample"!!

There is now a train connection between Katakolon and the village.

Do a google search for each location: such as "Mykonos sights" to find all there is to see at each one.

Second choice is to visit your local city library and browse through all the travel guides to look at pictures.

Your interests will be different than other travelers. Searching will help you decide how much time to devote to each location.
