Help with Croatia Itinery!

Hi,

Me and my girlfriend are travelling to Croatia from England by train at the beginning of September, for 2 weeks. However, we've not booked accomodation yet - will there still be decent availability with four weeks to go?

Please can you let me know what you think of the following itinary - is it realistic? Is it in a reasonable sequence:

  • We arrive in Zagreb and was thinking of staying a couple of nights there
  • Then on to Plitvice for one night using bus service
  • Then to Hvar for a few nights via Split
  • Then to Korcula for several nights
  • Day trips to Ston and Orebic from Korcula
  • Then to Dubrovnik for a few nights
  • Day trip Mljet from Dubrovnik
  • Then travel from Dubrovnik to Zadar for a night (possible day trip to Pag from Zadar??)
  • Then back to Zagreb where we get the train home

How does that sound to those that have been? Please bear in mind we will be using public transport and won't be hiring a car. Is there anywhere else I should consider, and possibly susbtitute for one of the places Ive mentioned???

Any help appreciated! Thanks.

Your itinerary sounds pretty aggressive.

I would probably skip Zadar and Pag altogether and stay the extra day in Dubrovnik and then head back to Zagreb.

You would have to have it pretty mapped out right down to making sure that there is bus service at the right times, otherwise you will fall behind in your schedule.

Have fun traveling. You're in for some beautiful sights.

Hi Dom,

It's a long way from Zagreb to Dubrovnik--we flew Croatia Airlines between the two cities.

Also, I'd suggest that you carefully plan your trips to the islands (Hvar and Korcula) because the ferry doesn't run every day. Here's the website for the ferry schedules: Jadrolinija Ferry

Enjoy your travels!

Hmm probably should scrap the idea of Pag. As for the ferries, Ive checked the website and they seem to sail everyday. I know you say it sounds aggressive, but we are there for two weeks and essentially we are only going to HVAR, Korcula and Dubrovnik. I am told it is straight forward to get from Zagreb to Split and that there are regular ferries between the islands...

Hi Dom,

Rick Steves' Croatia and Slovenia Guidebook is excellent if you don't already have it, I'd recommend getting a copy. He provides excellent information about transportation connections for the type of trip you're planning to take.

In early September, there will be at least 2 daily catamarans from Split to Hvar - one Krilo and at least one Jadrolinija. You should be able to find schedules online. The catamarans dock at Hvar town rather than the less convenient ferry dock in Stari Grad. The Jadrolinija catamaran also goes from Hvar to Korcula, although it arrives at the north end of the island and you'll need to take a bus to Korcula town. On your return from Dubrovnik, it would be best to take the bus to Split and then either train or bus back to Zagreb. Consider stopping in Split for a night or two, maybe on your way back to Zagreb.

I agree to be careful about ferry times in the islands. I made a mistake on Korecula, and thought there was a ferry to Hvar.

I personally think Zagreb was nice. The old citys was good. I stayed there 3 nights and wish I would of just stayed 1 night so I would have had more time on the islands.
