Help planning 2-3 weeks in Slovenia

My grandparents emigrated to US from Slovenia in early 1900's and it has been my dream to visit and stay long enough to get a "feel" for this country. I have several questions I hope you all can help with.

1.My husband and I would like to travel during shoulder season to help keep costs doable. When IS shoulder season in Slovenia?
2. Where should we go and what should we see? We will be visiting two small towns near Lubj. where my grandparents were born, so other than that, what do you suggest?
3. We would like to travel by public transport (train, etc.) but could and would rent a car for part of the trip. How easy is it to drive in Slovenia? Are roads well marked? We would bring our GPS. Are there areas we could do by train and then do more off the beaten track places by car?
4.Lastly, and this is a very important question for us: When we travel to western Europe, we usually plan an entrance and exit city, with hotel reservations for the first and last nights, and then do the rest of the trip without reservations. We stay in one place until we want to move on and are not forced to leave an area earlier than we'd like or forced to stay longer. We just scout hotels when we arrive in the next city or town. Usually, we have pretty good luck with this but have had some hiccups along the way. Is this something we could do in Slovenia? Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. Judy

Angela, Thank you for getting back to me. As we are still in the early planning stages, I am sure I will have more questions and I appreciate your willingness to hear from me again! Judy

Judy..Lucky you! We have just returned from our 2nd trip to Slovenia in 2 years, and my love affair with that wonderful country continues! We travel by rental car...the roads are very good, if narrow, and it is the very best way to see the country. We didn't use GPS and had no difficulties. we stay at tourist farms and B&Bs..booked in advance mostly. The one time we didn't was for a Sat. night near Kostanjevica na Krki and we had trouble finding a place that wasn't booked solid because of weddings!I planned our trips using www.slovenia.info..the site is one of the best tourist info sites I've seen and made all the planning so easy. Also check out Slovenia at www.burger.si just for fun and to get an idea of what you would like to see. Ljubljana is wonderful and we were lucky enough to be there for the end of summer festival. Slovenia is beautiful, the people friendly, the food great, and the beer and wine very good....what more could one want! We are already planning our return to see areas we have not seen.

Hi, Judy.

Slovenia is super easy to drive around in, and car travel is the cheapeast and most efficient. As the Slovenian economy grew, bus and train service became a shadow of their former selves in the past 10 years.

Roads are well marked, and signs are easy to read. Most rental car companies include the road tax sticker, so that helps save some $$$. Garmin GPS maps work really well there!

**For a rental of 3 weeks look at leasing. :)

Ljubljana is fun. A great little city. I'd try to spend some time there over a weekend, and make sure you squeeze in a Thursday night in Lju, as it's late shopping night, and the streets fill up with people as everything is open late, it's a great experience.

There are lots of traditional and classical concerts going on (google), and the Cathedral isn't ancient - but it's impressive.

Staying down in the Karst district is also a must. If you have the time, the caves at Postojna, Predjama, and Skocjan should not be missed. Words are inadequate to describe them - incredible. Even doing all 3 in two days, you would not be bored!!! :)

The small beach towns are nice (not incredible, but nice), and a great place to relax for a couple of days - maybe hit a spa, soak in the Adriatic. (Portorose, Piran, Primrose, etc).

Bled is beautiful. It's very touristy in the high season, but in the shoulder season should be great!

Sounds like a lot, but all of these things are less than a 2hr drive tops (mostly under 60-90mins), and worth 2-3 nights.

Alot of people also get into aggro-tourism there (staying on farms) haven't done that myself yet - but maybe google it. Hear good things.

For hotels/B&B's etc, do book in advance. Slovenia is just not as full of them as the rest of Europe.

Salzburg, Venice, and the former Yugoslavia are quick sidetrips, and can even be done as day trips! (Drive to Salzburg is beautiful.) There are also ferries that leave form the coast which could be a fun experience.

Have fun!

PS - Rick's book isn't all that great on Slovenia, but the Lonely Planet Slovenia book is really in depth, and great! Even an older copy would do! :)

You are all so helpful. Thanks for the tip to look beyond Rick's books. My husband and I have relied on them to the exclusion of others in the past, but maybe this time we will have to look at others in additions to Rick's, I can't wait for the 2010 books to come out. Thanks to all again. Judy

Judy, we are now (10/22) after 2 weeks in Slovenia. We have a GPS (Garmin) and personally would not leave home without it.
1. farm stays were terrific. We spent 5 nights total on 3 different farms. The best one was "Ramsak" near Logarska Dolina, email, [email protected]

Best sight: Vintgar Gorge near Bled. Rick gives this 1 star...it should be a 3 star.

Best town: Ljubljana...about the best midsize town (300K) town we have seen in a long time. Follow Rick on this one as he has the town down pat

We did the Istria area of Croatian on the "Croatian part" of our trip since this works out better logistically. We picked up and turned in our car in Ljubljana and then took the train to Zagreb to get our "Croatian car" It is way to expensive to drop a car in another country.

We travel exactly like you...reservation for the first night and then see how things develop.

Slovenia is great...fabulous sights, friendly people, and good food.

Note: prices are slightly higher than in Rick's 2007 book.

If you like to hike I recommend getting out into the Alps. When I visited Slovenia in the end of August 2008 I booked a five day trek in the Julian Alps and it was amazing. Staying in the mountain huts was a great experience. The huts sell food, and so you could hike up to a hut for lunch. You can also spend the night.

Our guide was from Humanfish, and I know they do (or at least did) day hikes as well:

The Ljublj South Concentration camp is also worth checking out. It doesn't cost anything to visit the sight, although you'll have to drive out to it. (Ljublj South is a sub camp of Mauthausen-Gusen. The political prisoners held at the camp built the Ljublj tunnel). It was a very moving experience.

On a side note, there's a restaurant with very good food across the street from the camp.

Here's some basic info on the camp:

Hi to all!

That's my first post here. I am living in Slovenia so I can also help you with some advices what to see here. The site http://kraji.eu/slovenija/slovenija/eng mentioned above is my site and all the places you can see there I visited by myself and took photos. I visited a lot of other places here but still didnt have time to put them on my site. :)

I agree with posts above and I am glad that mostly you liked my country.

So Judy when do you plan to come here and how many days do you plan to stay here? You mentioned 2-3 weeks and april/may? Is this correct?
And do you have some special things that you are interested in like nature, culture sites, old cities ... or you just like some good mix of all of them?
After you answer I can give you some list of my suggestions!
