We're considering taking a bus between Istanbul and Izmir--is there an interesting city halfway between the two cities to stop for a night to break up the long bus trip?
We also haven't ruled out a taking a plane.
Thanks!

I am from izmir Turkey :)
I recommend you to choose Canakkale route, You can spend one full day in Galippoli (gelibolu in Turkish) and canakkale. Troya (truva in Turkish) is near to Canakkale too.
You may have a chance to see Canakkale Bosporus which is wonderful and historical...
Other route is going through from Bursa city which is not exiting. :)
If you send me you mail address I can send some reference map and route on details., total drive is 9 hours and could be interesting for you even if in the day time
iyi gunler :)
Thank you, Gy! That's a good suggestion--we will consider Canakkale as a stopping point and are also checking into airfares!
Remember to check all the low fare airlines - I found air tickets in Turkey to be quite cheap and definitely the way to go to same time and long road/rail trips.
Check out Pegasus, OnurAir and others besides Turkish airlines.
Thanks Arnold!
We did just that and found an airfare for $45. per person between Istanbul and Izmir on Atlas Air. We're booked and ready to go--I think that this will be a better option for us!
