Greek Itenerary

Planning on trip to Athens - Mykonos - Santorini from 6/19/10 - 6/27/10. We plan to stay 2 nights in Athens, leave from Piraeus on Monday morning (6/21) for Mykonos by ferry. We will stay 3 nights on Mykonos before leaving for Santorini Thursday morning (6/25) once again traveling by Ferry. We will stay 3 nights in Santorini before flying to Athens early Sunday morning for our return flight to the states. Does this sound like a workable itenerary? Once ferry schedules become available (for June) will we be able to book on the necessary dates? My only concern is Thursday from Myknonos to Santorini. There is a ferry going there, right? We have booked hotels on Mykonos and Santorini; however, still looking for one in Athens. Also, will we need to (or be able to) purchase tickets for the new Acropolis Museum before we arrive? Any information, suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, there is definitely a ferry between Mykonos and Santorini on 6/25. In fact you have two options. You can take the 10am ferry to Paros and have time for a coffee before catching the Noon Blue Star ferry to Santorini, arriving around 3:30pm. http://www.bluestarferries.com Or you can wait for the afternoon highspeed ferry that leaves Mykonos for Santorini around 3:00pm, arriving around 5:30pm. http://www.ferries.gr/hfd

Flying back to Athens on the same day as your flight home is probably OK, but there is always a chance for a problem to arise if you choose to do that. I suggest that you take the very next flight out to Mykonos when you first arrive at the Athens Airport and save your time in Athens for the end of your trip. This will give you a couple of extra days to get back to the mainland in case the unexpected happens, and you will be able to relax and make your way out to the airport at a much more leisurely pace. And if the ongoing connection from Athens>Mykonos doesn't work time-wise, think about possibly reversing your direction and flying out immediately to Santorini first then taking the ferry to Mykonos. This will also give you the second option of catching a highspeed ferry from Mykonos back to the Mainland at the port of Rafina, only about 2-2.5 hours away, then a bus ride into Athens.

You don't have to buy tickets to the new Acropolis Museum in advance.

Sounds very doable.
On Mykonos, the Aqua Taverna restaurant was excellent and with a beautiful sunset view. It's in the "Little Venice" area right on the water.
On Santorini try to get down to Ammoudi Bay if you can. The seating is also right on the water, and you chose your fish/seafood to be grilled seaside.

Be advised that when you order grilled meats and fish you're charged by weight for whatever you order, so be very sure you know what you're paying BEFORE you agree to it.

I would be inclined to buy my ferry tickets on arrival, either go to a travel agent and buy both at once, or buy the one to Mykonos, then buy the one to Santorini a day or so ahead of time.

Thank you for the reply. Since we are staying 2 days in Athens upon arrival my plan was to purchase ferry tickets from a travel agent then. However, when booking the hotel for Myknonos they requested ferry information one week before our arrival for transfer to the hotel. With this being our first trip to Greece and the islands, I was not sure of the situation upon arrival to Mykonos.

To simplify your life you can just go online to the website for Amphitrion Holidays and use their booking function once the schedules are fixed. They have a travel desk at the Athens Airport so you can pick up your tickets when you first arrive and be done with it. They're located on the Arrivals Level between Exit/Entry Doors 2&3. They're open 24/7. If you don't make your purchase in advance of your arrival you can just go there upon arrival and buy them on the spot. It's my understanding that they don't take credit cards, so use cash. There are ATMs at the airport. Be sure to notify your bank of your intention of using your ATM cards/credit cards outside the States.

I have continued to look for ferry connections between Mykonos and Santorini and can't seem to find one. I received a reply from an individual stating I would have no problem getting a ferry on a Thursday, 6/24 - but please note I posted the date of 6/25 which is actually a Friday. We have confirmed reservations at hotels on each of the islands we are visiting, but I'm concerned about the connection between Mykonos and Santorini on Thursday, 6/24. Maybe I'm checking too early?

Catherine:

Again, look here: http://www.ferries.gr/hfd

You will see that the only "No sailing" dates in June are June 9, 16 and 30.

You can't find this yet on any of the ferry schedule/booking websites because it's too early to book.

This ferry has been making this same run at approximately the same time every year for the past several years. It's one of the most popular routes and will not be eliminated. Rest assured that you will be able to get to Santorini on that day. Besides, you will have a backup option. There's a different ferry in the morning from Mykonos to Paros at 10am which takes an hour, and at Noon the Blue Star car ferry stops at Paros on the way to Santorini. So either way you will make it.

Thank you for the helpful information! We have finalized our trip to Greece in June. We fly home to the states on Sunday, 6/27 @ 11:45 am. We have booked a 7:00 am flight that same morning from santorini taking us into the Athens airport with an arrival time of 7:40 am. That gives us about 4 hours. My traveling companions have expressed a little concern about flying from island same day as our departure home. Should we be concerned? We are flying agean air from santorini to Athens. Will we have any trouble getting from our hotel to the airport in santorini that early?

Already asked and answered above. Aegean Airlines has an excellent performance record. Hotels are used to guests leaving on the morning flight and will assist in scheduling a taxi to pick you up.

Yes. Wanted to assure my traveling companions that our itenerary is very doable, so thought I would double check. Thank you again.
