Greek Islands to Istanbul

I will be arriving in Athens about 10 days before I go to Istanbul for RS tour of Turkey end of September. Was planning to go to one of the Greek islands (have not pick one yet) prior to heading to Istanbul. Is it better/easier to go back to Athens and fly to Istanbul or is there a relatively easy way to get Istanbul from one of the Greek islands (this appears to be a bit more complicated/ expensive than I thought). Will be going back to Greek islands/Athens through Samos after tour.

It's very time-consuming and somewhat complicated to get to Istanbul from the Greek islands. Choose an island close to Athens, such as Hydra, so you can easily get back to the mainland for a flight to IST. Turkish Airlines, Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air all have direct flights. I'm seeing great prices now for the end of September on Olympic Air, around €100 one-way. As far as I know there are no direct flights from the Greek islands to IST in late-September, but check with Atlas Jet and Pegasus Air for flights from Mykonos.
