Greek islands in February

For all those familiar with Greece, am I crazy to consider going to a couple of Greek islands next February?? I am not sure of the ferry service, weather and most hotels seems to be closed. Everything seems to be geared towards April to September. Should I consider April instead?

Gail, i think the reason u have not received an answer y et, is your headline ... the "regulars" see it and groan, oh no, not another person we have to tell the sad news to, that they refuse to hear... so they don't even open up the thread. I almost didn't but glad I did, because I see you are open to reconsideration.

You are RIGHT -- everything is geared to April to September. February is possibly THE worst month of the year, weather-wise. April of course has flowers, and green, and Easter and sunshine... If you REALLY want to see Greece in all its glory, you should consider MAY ... MAY is Greece's Heaven. But if not possible, then April is the Vestibule to Paradise. But, for sure, dump February ... No no no Feb is for the Caribbean!! If you look on a Globe, Greece is NOT down by the Caribbean, its more like Virginia or N. Carolina & even chllier in Feb wind & rain.

If you have the choice I would definitely choose April over February. As Jan says February is probably the worse month for weather, and even the new ferries can be unreliable at that time of year.

By April things are beginning to open up, and the weather is likely to be much better especially if you go furthe south; people swim in Crete in April, for example. (In fact some people swim in Crete all the year round, but sane people start in April!)

Gail,

As the others have mentioned, February is one of the worst times of year to travel in the Greek Islands as many of the tourist facilities are CLOSED. If you're able to re-schedule the trip for April (preferably later in the month) or May, I'm sure you'll have a MUCH more pleasant travel experience in the Greek Islands.

As a compromise, you could perhaps gift wrap the tickets for a wonderful Greek holiday and present those to your sister in February?

You (and/or your sister) might find it very helpful to have a look at This Website. If you have specific questions, send an E-mail to the author of the site. I've always found that he provides very prompt and knowledgeable replies.

BTW, when the time comes, please extend birthday greetings to your sister on her 50th (it's not a big deal, really).

Happy travels!

Oh oh, I guess I will have to break the bad news to my sister who has been looking forward to her 50th birthday party in Greece in February. It probably will have to be postponed until at least April. Since she wants to spend most of her time on the beach it sounds like February is a no go.

Thanks

If you are wanting to spend time on the beach, choice May over April, June over May. I know you Canadians are tough and a have a different concept of cold so you might tolerate the cold temps better but if you are really wanting beach time, you need to wait. Understand your geography. The Greek Isles are as far north as New York city. It can be pretty cold and miserable at that time of year.

Wow, Ken! Can I be YOUR sister?! :) I won't expect Gail to buy my ticket, but I sure hope she's coming with me....travelling is WAY more fun with her on board!
Resounding answer seems to be NOT February! Re-think, re-think :) Thanks everyone!!
