Greek Islands in August

Hello, My sister and I will have 10-12 days in Greece. We will meet in Athens and want to have sufficient time to see historical sites/museums before going island hopping. We both really want to go to Santorini along with a less touristy island. Any recommendations? Also, I'm wondering if this is the worst possible time to go to the islands (we cannot go any other time). Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

August will be the busiest time to go, that is a popular month for Europeans to take holiday, and many head to the islands. Typically, I rely on finding a room once there, but you will need to book ahead. I suggest only a night or so in Athens at the beginning, see a few things, then fly to Santorini (Aegean Air has cheap flights). For a second island, look at the ferry routes back to Athens and check out the islands along the way. For less touristy, I would avoid Mykonos and Ios, even Naxos is filled with resorts, but it is big enough to avoid the crowds. You might consider Paros, Sifnos, Milos and a handful of other lesser known islands. Wind up with another night or two in Athens, this will buffer you against unexpected ferry delays and you make your flight.
