Greek Islands/Athens guidebook?

Sorry, if this has been posted recently. I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a good guidebook that covers the main Greek Isles and Athens. I was looking at the Lonely Planet version on Amazon and saw fairly mixed ratings. Should I go with this guidebook? Thanks!

We used Frommer's Greece guidebook and found it very helpful and reliable. It covers both Athens and the islands, as well as the rest of Greece.

i bought a book called greek island hopping 2010 20th edition on amazon. it has a lot of info on ferry timetabls and routes that i found most helpful, for general info on greece all the books are about the same. the book covers both greece and turkey coast, so if you plan to hit turkey via ferry then this can be your choice.

Yes, I forgot to mention that I will be in Turkey prior to visiting Greece and would need info on the Turkish ports as well. However, I just purchased the Lonely Planet Guidebook to Turkey. I imagine that will have all the port info for Turkey?

T. Cook's "Greek Island Hopping" is excellent.

Turkish port information can be found in the LP Turkey guide, but if you want info about ferries between Turkey and Greece you can find schedules here once they're available for your time frame. They usually operate mid-April through October 31.

There are 7 Turkish ports for travel to Greece: Ayvalik, Dikili, Kusadasi, Marmaris, Bodrum, Fethiye and Turgutreis.

There are 5 Greek island ports for travel into Turkey: Lesvos, Samos, Chios, Kos and Rhodes.

Gabriel, it also would help if we knew how long you'll be in Greece. I always say, first go to Barnes & Noble, browse the shelves, sit down in a chair, find out which "speaks" to you. As for Lonely PLanet, alas, its reputation is now declining; their maps now are ick (grey on grey), lots of hotel & dining references but text very terse, editors axed most of the detail on sights & history to make space for color pix, which u don't need, you can get on internet. The HK "Eyewitness: The Greek Islands (Plus Athens)" is a great Overview; VERY visual yet succinct. I suggest you get this at your local library & photocopy any relevant pages. Don't use this for hotels/restaurants, more for sightseeing info. "Greek Island-Hopping" is youthful, good for bargains, GOOD city maps. Frommer, more upscale. Overall, after 9 trips to greece, my Fave is ROUGH GUIDE to Greece. Not a lot of pix but GOOD maps, GREAT detail. And it's laid out so you can actually (carefully) pull OUT sections (Athens, Cyclades, Crete etc), and bind with Duct Tape, and have small, lightweight mini-guide books. For Athens, he Rick Steves Guide to Peloponnese & Athens has a good Athens section but NO Islands. Again, you might want to get this at the library & just photocopy his section on the Do-it-yourself tour of Acropolis & walks around Athens.

Thank you all for the info. I am still going to have to try to figure out which book is best :-). Basically, it's a two week trip. I'm thinking the majority of the time will be spent in Turkey. That leaves maybe 5 or 6 days for Greece on it's own. I know it doesn't seem like a long enough time, but the trip is more focused on Turkey. I primarily just interested in going to Athens (no more than two days), Santorini, and Mykonos (1 day on each island, total 2 days). I may also consider Rhodes or Crete. Basically, I just need a book that would describe in detail how to easily get to these islands and where are the best places to stay/see. Much like any Rick Steves guidebook. I really wish he had one for all of Greece.

you may push rhodos in but not crete. crete is a big island and traffic is slow, so you may feel spending a lot of time on the road. i think you need at least 4-5 days to do its justice - it's a great island worth a week on its own.
