This will be my first trip to Greece (& Europe) and am interested in visiting the island of Hydra. After which, I would love to take a boat to Santorini. Are there boats that go from Hydra to Santorini - or does one have to travel back to Piraeus/Athens?
You have to return to Piraeus first. Ferry Schedulels: http://www.gtp.gr
David, As Lee mentioned, travel to Hydra is only available by boat. For the trip to Santorini, you can travel either by Ferry or by air from Athens (check Aegean Air for info). Happy travels!
Thank you both for the responses. Have either of you traveled w/ Aegean Airlines. I read that you must check in 3 hrs. prior to departure. yikes..
David I've travelled with Aegean several times and have only needed to check in an hour before for internal flights. Alan
Ya. I was concerned because I read "Passengers must arrive At the Gate at least 3 hours before departure for international travel and 2 hours before departure for domestic travel"
I will be flying to Rome from Athens and didn't want to be there 3 hrs. before departure. And I was also considering a flight to Santorini right after I arrive at the Athens airport. I arrive at 4:20 pm and saw a flight to Santorini that departs at 6:30.. Want to take it, but was concerned that there might be difficulties.? What do you think? Thanks!
David- I agree, 1 hour in advance of a domestic flight is enough. The Good News: Olympic Air offers 24-hour advance check-in by internet, Aegean Airlines offers 48-hour advance check-in by internet. You can print out your own boarding passes. Both airlines have a baggage dropoff counter, so with your boarding passes in hand you shouldn't have any problem making that 6:30 flight. And if your international flight is transiting through another EU/Schengen country's airport you will have already passed through Passport Control and Customs, so when you get to ATH all you have to do is collect your bags and go upstairs to catch the flight to Santorini.
Aegean Airlines = fabulous! We flew them last summer. We had a flight from Madrid to Athens, had to change planes to get a flight to Santorini. It all began when for some reason I couldn't book online from the States. Card just wouldn't work. I (a bit reluctantly) called the airlines and was quickly connected with a rep who spoke flawless english, booked my trip and emailed me my confirmation within 5 minutes. The flights were just fine. Pleasant staff. Clean planes. But what topped off the experience....the plane was late leaving Madrid. My friend and i watching the minutes tick by.. at first no big deal but then getting concerned about making our connection in athens and then resigned to the fact we probably missed it. well....we are en route to athens and shortly before landing, the flight attendant announces for passengers bound for santorini to please get off first and gather by the door inside the airport and we would be met by a rep. it was me and my friend and 5 girls wearing bunny ears that were a bachelorette party. the rep met us and we were whisked through athens airport...i mean stairwells, back doors, cut through to front of security lines (yes, evil eye from those in line) and practically running thorugh the airport. what a sight we were i am sure. they held the plane for us. to make it easier, they saved the seats in the front two rows of the plane so we could all plop down quickly, door shut and we were off! at that point, i wondered about our luggage. well, sure enough, the luggage made it too! i have never felt moved to write a letter to an airline before but that did it! i had to send compliments. I have booked 2 flights with them again this summer.
