We plan to spend 2 days in Naxos in May. Is it best to stay near Naxos town or further down the beaches. Any hotel recommendations?
My advice would be to stay in town. Bus connections in May are not very good, especially in the evening. It should be no problem to take the bus to the beaches during the day, but you may have a problem in the evening to get back to your room/hotel.
If you stay in town you can take the bus to the beaches and back. And in the evening you can have dinner and stroll around town without having to worry about getting back to your room.
We always try to get a room between the old town center and Agios Georgios. It's five to ten minutes walk to town or the nearby beach Agios Georgios.
We stayed at the Pensione Irene II in Naxos. It is a basic and clean hotel...close to the beach and probably about a 10-15 minute walk to the town center. And did I mention inexpensive?
We stayed 3 nights at the Nissaki...a medium priced luxury hotel on St Georges beach, about 5 min walk from old town Naxos City and all of the restaurants and shops. We spent our days swimming in the sea, and the nights eating and drinking in town...hotel is rated as the #3 hotel out of 76 for Naxos city...the breakfasts were really good...the owner's are very helpful (and their old English bulldog is a delight)
We stayed in Naxos at Grotta Hotel 5 years ago for 40E per night in early April, probably at least double that now (I know the Mykonos hotel we stayed at same year is over double now). It is just outside of the town centre and very quiet, family run. We rented a car for a day from one of the local rental agencies and drove all over this beautiful island - great day, we only had a tiny map, all road signs were in Greek, but it is a small island so one really can't get lost. Found the locals really friendly.
