Greece--what shoes to wear

For the Athens & Heart of Greece tour, 2 weeks, what type of shoe is best for the Peloponnese? Currently planning to bring running shoes with inserts (plastic support in middle, overall cushion). Also bringing 2nd pair of inserts (just cushion). Will a running shoe offer adequate support & rugged enough? Would like to avoid stiff hiking shoes.

For 26 years I've never used anything but running shoes in Greece and have I never thought that hiking shoes would have been a better choice.

Don't think it has to be either or. There are plenty of shoes that would fit between the two extremes. We both wear an ECCO shoe which has good support, is waterproof (which I think is very important) and has a lugged sole not unless some hiking shoes. The thicker sole provide good cushioning from rough streets and sidewalks which a thinner soled running shoe does not.
