Greece travel

Anyone use the rail service in Greece? We will be staying in Vouliagmeni and possible travel to a few islands. Do you rent a car or do the train, it looks limited, but not finding a detail of Greece train travel site with train company. Is it easier to use the trains and buses to get through the country? Are there any ports to see the islands from Vouliagmeni? Thanks

Dear Nance. Staying in Vouliagmeni is not actually very convinient to get to the main port of Pireas.
But using the main bus lines and then Metro and train that has access to the port is the only way to get there. You should also know that the place you have chosen to stay is in a really good location and you will love it especially since it is close to the sea.
I also send you some useful sites for you so you can check on the transportation in Athens and Greece and if you still have questions, i will be willing to help you.

Wish you have a great time in Greece

Christos

From Vouliagmeni you would need to get to one of the limited port towns, the biggest port would be Piraeus to head nearly anywhere, you could also go about the same distance to Rafina, serving mainly the Northern Islands, or there is a small port it appears, Lavrio, that has service to at least Kea and a couple other islands. There is in Athens a Suburban Rail system, I am not sure of all of the lines, but I do not think they reach down to where you will be. Probably the bus will be the most reliable route, a rental car is OK if you can avoid Athens. The Greek National Rail system is getting better, but it is very limited, really only of use to go from Athens to Patras, to Thessoloniki, and to Kalambaka to see the Meteora. Currently, both the National Bus site (KTEL) and the Rail site are of very limited use, and difficult to find any route or schedule information.
