greece-rome in may iten just starting, suggestions/

Family of 4 (w/museum/historical loving children ages 11 and 12)
Arrive Athens early evening of May 12, Depart Rome morning of May 24.
Were thinking 13-15 stay in Athens, 21,22,23 stay in Rome. From what I've read Corinth, Myccenae, Naphlio, and Epidavros would be a good group to see together. ?? Should we allow 2 days (including travel) for these? We REALLY want to add Crete to this trip. Timing wise, where is a good place for it? We had originally thought of flying to Rome, but would other types of travel up to Rome be worthwhile, fun, reasonable, and maybe stop at Pompeii? Thank you ahead for any and all suggestions. We were blessed with some very helpful info for a trip we took last summer.

Hi, Melissa

Try this:

2-3 days in Athens

2-3 days Korinth, Myceneae, Nafplio, Epidavros--best done by car. Add 1 or 2 more days and see Delphi & Olympia.

Crete can be reached by ferry or plane from Athens. I think there's still an overnight ferry that takes about 12 hours. Your kids would love it if the seas aren't too rough. And, you should stop in Santorini; it's beautiful, even though tourists are loving it to death. Check the ferry schedules to see what works best for you.

I have tried to find a reasonably efficient way to get from Greece to Italy other than flying. There are ferries from Patras to Brindisi and other ports in Italy, then you can train to Rome, but the connections don't seem to work out very well. It is probably best to fly Athens to Rome. If you want to see Pompeii you can take an early train from Rome to Naples, then the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii, back to Naples to see the Archeological Museum there, then back to Rome. Makes for a long day, but it can be done.

Hope this helps.
