I read about the riots last week, and how ferries and planes were grounded for the day. I was wondering if anyone knew if this was only on the mainland? or were ferries not running between islands?
Ashley,
I'll be in Athens about a month to join a RS tour, so I'm also a bit concerned about the situation.
However, I'm going to "take my chances" and hope that the demonstrations and "riots" have settled down by that time.
Happy travels!
Are you trying to ask if future strikes will interrupt the ferries? That's always a possibility. There's another strike set for May 5 but there's no indication yet if it will affect ferry schedules, although Greek sailors are thinking about joining in. The economic situation in Greece is unstable. Wage cuts, new higher tax rates and general political disagreements all contribute to a volatile situation that will most likely get worse before it gets better. I found this website where you can keep track of the ongoing situation:
I am wondering if only ferries in/out of Athens were affected, because then we may just avoid Athens (although I know that's no guarantee it wouldn't 'spread' to the island). In the article I had read, it wasn't clear if all ferries in Greece were affected, or if only those at Piraeus were not running??
Thanks for the link! Google news didn't seem to be providing much info on the situation.
