Greece or Sicily

My wife and I are planning a trip to either greece or Sicily. We have a good idea where to stay and what to see in Sicily But need some help with greece. We will be spending three weeks in late May early June. We want to rent a home for a week in one or two places. A few days in Athens and the rest of the time on the road. What are two places to use as a home base?...Boyd

Going to Greece without spending time on at least one island is like going to the Louvre and not viewing the Mona Lisa. 3 weeks gives you ample time to see the sights of Athens as well as other areas of the mainland, such as Nafplion, Delphi and/or Meteora, coupled with one or two islands, all at a relaxing pace, and late-May and June is the best time to go. If this appeals to you choose one island group so you don't waste much time in transit between islands. Some have airports and if you sign up for the Aegean Airlines email newsletter you will be notified when they release "saver" fares, which can be as inexpensive as a ferry ticket depending on the destination out of Athens/Piraeus. Those fares are already available for some dates with more to come. For example, you could fly to Santorini and from there take a ferry to Naxos or Paros, both of which are no more than a couple of hours away from Santorini. Afterwards you can take a pleasant ferry ride back to the mainland for your flight home. Another option would be Kos and Rhodes, or Crete by itself since it's so big and really needs a week with a rental car to do it justice.

Lee's ideas are always great. Consider a flight to Athems but don't enter the city - continue directly on to Santorini using Aegean Air. Five to seven days on Santorini (check Oia) then ferry to Naxos for five days. Return to Piraeos and then spend some time in Nafplio and Delphi, then, bofore returning home visit Athens. May/June is excellent. If this scheme appeals to you return here for more specifics regarding lodging. Enjoy a great trip.
