Greece, last minute, 5 days, 2 adults, 2 kids, August

I have read much on travel sites about Greece but am trying to help my daughter with some information. She, husband and 2 girls will be going to Greece in August, on the ground 5 days. It was not expected and they have little time to prepare. They would like to see the most important things in Athens and then head for one of the islands for a day and possibly overnight.

Since this will be in the heat of summer anyone know a nice hotel in Athens with A/C near the important sites? How about hotels on one of the islands. Which island would you suggest? They are interested in art, architecture and history but will have to spend some beach time with the 6 & 9 rear olds.

Ideas that would help narrow down all the obvious planning would be a great help. If there was more time, I could do a better job but I thought that you folks would have some insight.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Our family has always done research well before our trips but this time, it is just not going to be done in depth Both work and have little time.

Hi Pat,

I'm currently planning a trip for me and my boyfriend for September. Can't even TELL you the research we've done!

I found a great bargain on an Athens hotel that gets pretty good reviews on TripAdvisor. It's not a 4*, but for 3 nights, it will suit us just fine. For 113 Euro per night on the "Early Bird" special, this is a bargain, given the location. Again, not fancy, but clean, well located and with friendly staff.

The Philippos Hotel is located only steps from the Metro. It's within a few minutes (on foot) of the Acropolis, Temple of Zeus, the New Acropolis Museum, the Agora, and Plaka. I haven't been there, but have researched hotels like crazy and this seems to fit the bill.

Also, Athens Gate is well situated, only a few blocks away. It is pricier, but the reviews are overwhelmingly positive for this "one step up" hotel.

They should make reservations IMMEDIATELY! August is Super High Season in Greece!

We are spending our last 3 nights on Santorini. The ferry can be as cheap as 10 Euro. They are famed for stunning sunsets and great local wine. I've wanted to go here for 30 years and can't believe it's less than 90 days away now!

We are staying in Imerovigli, on the volcano's Caldera, at a place called the Remezzo Villas. Since this is a life long dream, we are paying a bit more for this accommodation, but the reviews on TripAdvisor lead us to believe we can't possibly be disappointed here.

For a more family oriented and less expensive hotel, Hotel Mathios in Akrotiri on Santorini has mixed reviews, but good prices.

On Santorini, we'll likely visit the museum in Fira, the excavation at Akrotiri (closed, but maybe we can still poke around), a winery and spend the rest of the time relaxing at the hotel.

We're renting a car for just one day so we can see the island, but still enjoy the hotel to relax after Athens and before the long trip home.

A vacation can't be ALL shlepping around!

Best, Linda
