Greece itinerary - need a rental car for 2 weeks ?

Hi, My daughter and I will be in Greece, this August, for about 2 weeks. Using Rick's Greece tour itinerary-arrive/tour Athens, Delphi, Peloponnesse Mtns, add Hosias Loukas, Olympia, Kardamyli, Mani villages, Monemvasia, Bysantine Mystrs, Mycenae and Nafplio, Epidavros, Is of Hydra, return to Athens. Should we rent a car in Athens (or on the outskirts of Athens) to be able to see the sights above in the 2 weeks ? Do we need to reserve a spot, on a ferry, for the rental car if we are traveling to some islands or can we drive (ex., to Hydra vs ferry) ? Thank you Karen
Or, can we travel between cities/sights via bus, train, ferry ?

Karen - There are no car ferries to Hydra - it's a car free island except for the service vehicles. As for the Peloponnese peninsula, getting a car as you leave Athens and dropping it off before Hydra is probably your best bet. We drove the Peloponnese last year and it was the easiest way to get around. The bus connections weren't frequent enough and would have added so much time to our itinerary. As for your itinerary, you really need to check out the driving distances and times (the roads are tiny and not highways most of the way - mountain and coastal roads) to ensure you have enough time in each place. The online maps on the Michelin website gave us the best information but maybe other posters have other suggestions. Everywhere you are going are wonderful places, so allow enough time to enjoy them and at least a day or so to relax as your itinerary is a lot of walking and hiking. Enjoy your trip!
