Greece hotel reservations or drop in

Hi, two of us going to Greece on May 18 of 2013. If we are out in the Peloponese and Crete will we be able to find places to stay for modest rates as we go or should we try to make reservations for the most part? thanks Saxon

I make reservations in advance as that was I have a better choice of where I stay (quality and price) and don't want to waste precious travel time hunting for a room.

As long as you don't need all the amenities of an established hotel when you're away from a heavily-touristed area you should be able to find something as you go. Just keep an eye out for "Rooms To Let" and "Domatia" signs.

I haven't been to Greece in a long time, but at every port and bus station there were people vying for your business. This usually worked out fine, but occasionay the property was further aeay from the town than I had expected it to be.

Saxon At that time of year it's pretty much a matter of personal taste, I would say. Pretty much anywhere you go is likely to have somewhere with vacancies and, if you want to stay flexible and are prepared to take pot luck, there's no reason to book in advance. On the other hand if you are the kind of person who prefers the security of knowing where you are going, or have very specific tastes in accommodation, then booking in advance isn't likely to cost more. The exception I would make to taking pot luck is if you are planning to visit Nafplio at a weekend. It is very popular with Athenians as a weekend destination and places in the old town can get really booked up. Have a good trip. Alan
