I'm planning a late July vaca to Greece & islands with a girlfriend. We are both 40ish and would like to spend no more than 30-50 euros/night max. We would appreciate lodging recommendations for Athens, Santorini, Rhodes, other islands as well. I'm also a little confused about the ferry charges - what can I expect to spend on transportion?
There's a very good chance that even the cheapest hotel will cost you more than 50 euro/night on Santorini. The cheapest place I know, Casa Francesca, is charging 55 euro. Villa Fotini is charging 60 euro. So is Villa Manos. Villa Popi is 70 euro. Kiklamino does show 50 euro/night but I don't know if this price is current. Koronios Villas shows 45 euro/night but that's for 2008. These mentioned all have websites.
If you are willing to share a dorm-style setting, the Youth Hostel Oia has beds w/breakfast for 17 euro. http://www.santorinihostel.gr
In Athens the cheapest hotel I know of is the "John's Place Hotel" at #5 Patroou Street, just off Mitropoleos Street a couple of blocks from Syntagma Square. I paid 35 euro for a single w/shared bath. In July I expect you'll be paying more. They don't have a website but you can call ahead: 011-30-210-322-9719
Also check the Student & Traveller's Inn and the Hotel Fivos:

Economy tickets for Athens/Piraeus to Santorini are 33.50 euro, 37.50 for indoor aircraft-style reserved seating, which is recommended for the long, 8 hour trip.

Santorini to Rhodes will be very similar.

You can also spend more for a sleeping cabin.
In Santorini, go downhill from the Fira Main Square, there is a parallel tree-shaded road that leads to a cluster of small, clean family-run budget hotels. This one http://www.santorini.com/hotels/delfini/ shows the area. The 3 streets running DOWN from this road have many, including are Hotel Antonia, (which lists a price of 50) and Summertime Pension, Villa Anemone, Pension Petros etc. A bit further down on these street are Hotel Haroula, Villa ANemomilos. THis link gives contact e-mails for all. SOme list prices of 60 & 70 but I say, don't fill out a form; write ALL of them an e-mail saying you can spend 50€ for a room with a/c. If any have vacancies (remember, tourism is down) they may write back saying yes. Good Luck!
