Working on our trip to Greece May 2010. We fly into Athens at 8:55 am 5/12/2010. Read Lee's post about Aegean Air's flight deals. Unfortunately, there are only 4 flights out of Athens to Crete that day - 5:30 am, 8:00 am, 5:00 pm, and 7:55 pm. Any suggestions on getting out of Athens to Crete without hanging around Athens airport for 8 hours after our flight from the US to Athens?
Check the websites for Olympic Air and Athens Airways.

You could always go into Athens and spend the day there and catch the evening flight to Crete. Might be painful if this is following an overnight flight from the US.
Ignore the last bit - I reread the previous post and Rich has found a flight leaving at noon that should work for you for the same price.
Thanks, fellas. Excellent info. We're leaning toward Chania as our place to stay on the island. So, the 12:50 flight on Olympic Air to Chania would be our best bet.
I arrived in Heraklion by boat from Santorini which was a fairly quick and easy crossing. Santorini/Crete is a good combo. If you haven't experienced Santorini, it is amazing--breathtaking beauty. I didn't think Heraklion would capture my interest but I found it a really intriguing visit for a couple of days. The people are a delight and you feel the true pulse of the place, it is not overwhelmed by tourists like many places in the Greek Islands. It has squares and parks to linger and people watch, museums, flea markets, good shops and street vendors, etc. Unpretentious and real. There is good bus service onward to Rethymno and then to Chania. All three cities are worth a look if you have the time. Crete has lots to see, have a great time!
Thanks, Rich. Very good info. We do plan on seeing Heraklion and Rethymnon.
