Hi, Should I carry American $ and exchange for Euros in anticipation that some small hotels/gas stations, restaurants won't take credit cards ? Any issue with finding ATMs in smaller towns in Greece ? Thanks, Karen
If the small towns you are talking about are the ones in your other post regarding getting around the Peloponnese (Monemvasia, Nafplio, Kardamyli, Olympia, Delphi), there are ATMs in each one of them as well as larger cities you will have to drive through... I don't remember places to exchange currency in any of the towns though. We first used the ATM at the airport, in Athens and then all along our route with no issues.
American currency and traveller's checks are practically useless unless you find a bank or currency exchange business open, and in a small village that might not be possible. And if you do find one, the exchange rate will be terrible. Use ATMs as often as possible. Anticipate your need so you don't find yourself without cash on hand. Be sure to notify your bank of your intention to use your debit and credit cards while you're travelling or they'll freeze your accounts on suspicion of ID theft/fraud.
Thank you all. Karen
