Greece, and Croatia

I am planning a 3 or 4 week trip to Greece and Croatia. I want to see the usual sites in Athens and do some Island hopping. I was highly advised to go to Croatia. my little reading so far suggests that travel between the two may be difficult. Any suggestions to itinerary and stops in places in between. I am a woman traveling alone, who usually stays in hostels. Also the cheapest way in and out of Europe and Miami. I know this is slightly vague, but I am starting planning so I'm open to suggestions.

Unless you can find a cheap flight between Dubrovnik or Split and Athens (check skyscanner.com or kayak.com), traveling between the two countries will be time consuming and challenging. So I would suggest you choose one country. If you choose Greece, get a copy of Thomas Cook's Island Hopping (or check it out from a library) to see how the islands are connected by ferry, and to get a feel for the various islands. It's usually easier if you travel within one island group (i.e. the Cyclades or the Dodecanese). What time of year are you going? During some busy times (July-August), and busy routes (Cyclades), you may need advance reservations. Spring and fall will have less crowds but also fewer ferries to choose from. It is often suggested to fly directly to your first (and farthest) island upon arriving in Athens, and then make your way back to Athens by ferry. However you arrange your vacation, be sure to be back in Athens with at least one full day (2 nights) before your flight home. Use that time for your Athens sightseeing. Now you must decide which islands to visit. Most people, on their first trip, visit the Cyclades. Fly to Santorini, then visit Milos, Sifnos, Paros, etc. on your way back to Athens. Or you might go off the beaten track and fly to Rhodes, then visit Tilos, Nisyros, etc. and ferry back to Athens. This is a good ferry site. Or check out this. The big Blue Star ferries do routes (almost like bus routes) through various island groups so you can find some logical connections. To research islands, check out some websites ... this one and/or Matt Barrett's. Feel free to post more specific questions as your plans evolve, or if you decide on Croatia instead.
