I'm planning on renting a Hyundai Matrix for driving in the country while in Greece. GPS is available for an extra 5 euro a day. Is it worth it? Does it work well? Does anyone have experience with a GPS unit in Greece? Thanks for the help. I'm using Swift Car Rental in Athens that was referred to on this site: http://www.greektravel.com/
We've driven with a GPS in the Athens area, the Peloponnese, and on Crete. Yes, A GPS unit is absolutely worth it. Ours got confused occasionally in smaller towns - for example telling us to turn left onto a one-way street (going the wrong way), but it righted itself within a block or two. So you still have to watch the road and street signs. Otherwise it was very helpful, certainly worth 5 euros a day.
A GPS in Greece is great to have, especially as you navigate your way out of Athens. Even on the back roads it is a treat and gives you assurance that you are not lost. If you are in Europe for an extended period or plan on going back, you may consider purchasing a GPS at home. We had a Garmin Nuvi 1370 with NorAm and Euro maps and it worked extremely well. A word of caution, make sure to put the support cradle and cable in your glove box when you park and take the unit into your hotel with you at night. One evening I forgot to lock my car doors and someone found the GPS in the glove box and walked off with it. Definitely my mistake and lesson learned.
