GPS in Turkey

I am considering taking a Garmin Nuvi 1370t GPS for navigation purposes in a rental car this summer. Does anyone have experience with similar devices? Are the mapping features adequate in Turkey? Would it be better to rent a car with the GPS included?

I can speak to some of your questions. We opted for a GPS with our Hertz rental car. The software had been updated in September, 2009. I suspect the mapping software you can buy for Turkey for your Nuvi will be very similar if not identical.

We were not impressed. It often would not be able to calculate a route between major cities (i.e Antalya to Kusdasi). It felt rare that it would actually recognize the address for our hotel. Since most of our hotels were in the old city, we usually just aimed it for city center or the harbor. There were new roads and major changes to the existing roads that were not shown on the map.

As long as you knew the limitations, you can easliy work around them. It was still nice to have and it was definitely a help. I just would not rely on GPS in Turkey like you do here in the USA. We bought maps, and asked strangers (especially cab drivers) for directions to our hotel, it was all good (for the most part).
