A friend and I are leaving in two days for Budapest. We'd like to go to one of the thermal baths that has some history and local flavor. What do people recommend?
We've been to both the Széchenyi and Gellért baths and prefer the Szé ...because it seemed more friendly. Whichever you choose you will be confused by the entry process no matter how many times you read the procedure..Just remember to bring you towel and a plastic bag for your wet suit.
I've been to Széchenyi. It was the only one that I went to in Budapest so I cannot compare with any of the others. I went at the end of October and it was a great experience to sit outside in the warm thermal bath with the mist against the cold air.
Another vote for the Szechenyi Baths - lots of locals frequent the baths. It is easy to reach by subway.
We also enjoyed the Szechnyi Baths. Another poster is correct--you will be confused regarding entering. We found no English spoken on the day we went. The key and the use of the locker was most confusing. In the locker room another bather who spoke not a word of English was able to demonstrate how to get the key to release. Be sure to take flip flops as there are some slippery areas on the outside decks. Visiting the baths was a highlight of our trip to Budapest. It is a wonderful old city and a bit underated IMO.
We spent a weekend a couple months ago in Budapest. We did not actually go to any baths but did strongly consider it and discuss it.
The one name that I have not heard mentioned here that I know is Highest Rated in Trip Advisor and also historical is the Rudas Baths. Have not been but may be worth considering.
Thanks to all! We went to Széchenyi and thought it was great.
