Getting wet in Croatia

We'll be in Croatia the first two weeks of September and are banking on it being as warm as Provence was last year at that time. Are we going to be sorry to drag swimsuits around on our trip? Is the snorkeling good and most important--can we rent snorkel gear? We'll be in Rovinj, Split and Dubrovnik.

That's what I'm thinking! I could drag my hands through the water too, while I'm lounging back there. Such a good idea.

We brought snorkel gear with us on our first trip to Croatia and barely used it. We snorkeled in Cavtat (the little town we stayed in south of Dubrovnik) and on Korcula. In those places, there was really not a lot to see underwater except rocks and sand and a very occasional small fish. Certainly not the interesting underwater sights you'll find in the Caribbean. Perhaps someone has had better luck elsewhere in Croatia? I think you can rent snorkel gear in some places in Croatia, if you want to try it for yourselves. I'd recommend that you bring swimsuits. The water was warm in early September. You might also want to pack a microfiber towel to use at the beach (unless you're staying at a large resort hotel, which provides beach towels).

One of my good friends has a great travel rule..."always bring a bathing suit on vacation, always!" You never know when a water or swimming opportunity will present itself and you want to be prepared. i have adopted her rule, it's a good one. Besides, bathing suits are small and easy to pack.

Thank you, Ladies. Don't think I'll worry too much about snorkel gear. Thanks for that information. I am glad to know the water will be nice and warm for a swim, though! As to always bringing a swimsuit because it is small...will it happen if I close my eyes and click my heels together three times? Dieting "my way" isn't really getting results! Nice thought, though!! ;o)

That's funny, Dawn! As an aside, another water-based activity (at least in Dubrovnik) is renting kayaks and paddling around Old Town. A guy I used to know did this on his honeymoon and he said it was one of the highlights of their trip. I imagine the views from the water looking over Dubrovnik would be spectacular. Have fun!

Kayaking does sound like fun! The key here is to get a two seater and make the husband do the work. If I start now I may be able to make that happen. I should also have a glass of wine and an umbrella. Maybe some cheese. "Ahhh, Isn't this nice? Just look at the lovely view, Dear!" (I really do think kayaking sounds like fun!)

In that case, you may want to sit in the back seat so he can't see exactly how much "effort" you are putting into the endeavor. "Keep your eyes straight ahead, honey, and keep navigating us while I power from behind. You're doing a great job..." Besides, this would give you the vantage point of being able to gently "prod" him with a paddle if he's not going fast enough. :)

A nice thing about Croatia, is that on many of the beaches you don't need to worry about bringing a swim suit ;-) In case you are a little modest, do bring one - I was there in late September and the water was warm and wonderful. (as a fellow Saint Paulite i know warm and wonderful is tough to imagine the last few days.) Enjoy Croatia is one of my favorites.

Thanks, David; I appreciate the info! Yes, a little warm weather right now would be great, wouldn't it? Hopefully we won't go from spring to fall this year!
