Getting to the island of Vis, Croatia

We will be in Split on September 7, 2009 with about 4 free days, which we'd like to spend on the island of Vis. I know that Croatian ferry schedules diminish in September and wondered if anyone has had any experience visiting Vis at this time of year? Do ferries run daily? Every few days??

In case we have transportation problems to Vis, we'd welcome any alternate suggestions for islands to visit. We've been to Hvar and Korcula and loved both. Thanks!

I was in Croatia this past September/October and Jadrolinija ran its high season schedule until the end of September. Although the 2009 high season schedule isn't yet posted on their website - www.jadrolinija.hr, the 2008 schedule I have shows 3 daily ferries between Split and Vis (only 2 on Tuesdays) - morning, mid-afternoon and evening (no evening on Tuesday). Even in low season (schedule available on website), there's a daily ferry to Vis.

Thanks, Frank. Have you also had any experience traveling between Split & Dubrovnik? It looks like a long ferry ride ... I wonder if a bus would be faster?

I used bus for travel between Dubrovnik and Split, although I detoured through Mostar. It's the much faster way to go, and there should be several daily buses compared to few ferries. Not sure the ferries even run daily. The bus station in Split is a short walk from Diocletian's palace, but you'll need to take a local bus from the new Dubrovnik bus station to old town or Lapid. Buy tickets at a news stand before boarding and be sure to validate.
