Getting to Slovenia

I am considering planning a trip to Slovenia for 2011. We live near Houston, Austin, and San Antonio, Texas and can fly out of any of those. I am wondering if it is better to fly into a city in Austria or Italy and rent a car and drive into Slovenia and then return the car to its rental point or would it cost just as much to fly to Ljubljana. Does anyone know the airlines that fly direct to Ljubljana? I am just beginning to plan but think we may visit there in September, 2011. Thanks to all who may have some information. I have never been to Slovenia but have traveled in both Austria and Italy and would love to return to either of those so it could be that a trip that included travel in any or all of those countried would be fine.

I'd look at www.skyscanner.com and/or www.whichbudget.com. It looks to me like you might have to fly to JFK or another airport to connect to a flight to Ljubljana. I don't see a direct flight. Consider picking a city in Austria or Italy that you want to visit and then train or fly from there. For our trip to Ljubljana, we took the train from Budapest.

Just posted this elsewhere.

Adria (Slovenia's natl airline) is part of Star alliance so you will easily be able to get tickets using CO/UA/LH from Houston to Ljubljana which only require one connection. The easy one will be Frankfurt since both LH and CO fly there directly from IAH.

Alternatively, as mentioned before, most of the other big European airlines will be able to get you there via their hubs. It will come down to price and travel time.

If you do choose to fly into another city, Zagreb is probably the closest one with easy transport (2 hr train ride).

We flew into Munich and then took an overnight train (with berths)into Ljubljiana, arriving just before little breakfast shops opened for the day. We took trains into Zagreb, then a bus to Split. We have nothing but fond memories of our Slovenia/Croatia trip.

Thanks to all for sharing your experiences. I am finding your suggestions very helpful as I begin the planning process. I checked the website for the Slovenian airlines and they have very reasonable fares from Frankfurt. I also checked with EasyJet and one could fly into London and fly to Ljubljana easily and without much expense so it looks like there are many ways to get there. I appreciate the help.

We fly out of DFW and this trip are flying to Madrid -- then to Venice for a few days -- then taking a train to Trieste, Italy -- then a bus to Koper, Slovenia where we will pick up our rental car. Whew! I checked on renting the car in Venice and just driving from there, but the cost was about double! After Slovenia we will head through Austria & Germany and drop off the car at the Frankfurt airport. Then Frankfurt back to DFW. That one-way rental dropoff charge is hefty.
