getting from US to Croatia

What cities in Europe have the best connections to Dubrovnik? I thought Venice would be a natural choice but not so. Frankfort? Vienna? Do I need advance purchase if I want to go open jaws like Frankfort-Dubrovnik or Zagreb-Vienna? Thanks.

I don't know about flights but you can catch a ferry from Bari, Italy to Dubrovnik.

kathy, You may be having difficulty finding flights from Frankfurt to Dubrovnik due to the spelling. Frankfort is in Kentucky, I believe. You might find some information by having a look at This Website. One possibility would be to fly from Munich to Dubrovnik via Norwegian Air, Vueling or GermanWings. Which airlines to use may depend on what time of year you'll be there, as some flights are only offered on a "seasonal" basis. Happy travels!

I'm not sure what you are asking. If your concern is getting to Croatia from the US, do not worry about the connecting city, just search your departing airport and the one you want to arrive at. Depending on price and airlines, the connections can be wildly different. As an example, searching for flights between Cincinnati and Zagreb yields several choices of airlines each connecting via their hubs (Zurich for Swiss Air, Paris for Delta, Munich for Lufthansa), but all getting you to Zagreb. If your thought is to spend time in a connecting city, then you really are talking separate itineraries or a multi-city ticket. For that, I would consider Budget airlines for travel within Europe. If you need help finding a good city to use as a departure point for Croatia from Europe, then go to www.whichbudget.com. There you can "reverse" search, basically say that you want to go from Croatia, then a city, then a list of destinations will show. Those same destinations will then have flights going to Croatia. The budgets really do not have an "open Jaw" option, you likely would be buying two one way tickets, and yes, any air ticket is best purchased well in advance. For budgets, review carefully the fees and baggage limitations, just plan on paying to check a bag in the price.

Thanks to those who looked beyond a spelling learning disability to offer some genuine advice. My original point was that I was seeing that some flights from within Europe went to Zagreb first and then Dubrovnik. I wa looking for a route with the fewest transfers, both from the US to a point in Europe and then to Croatia itself. I am also trying to figure out how to book an open jaws within the Crotia Airlines flights, or something comparable. To be specific, if I want to fly into Dubrovnik and out of Zagreb, after working my way up the coast. Thanks for all the help.

Kathy, you might try doing your flight search on kayak.com. It has a number of filters such as number of stops, layover airport, length of flight etc. which can help you figure out what the best options are. Also, day of week can make a difference. A few years ago when I flew back to DC from Dubrovnik, I could get home with one change in Vienna on certain days of the week and on other days two changes would have been required. Finally, go to the Dubrovnik airport site itself and look at the arrivals and departures. You will get an idea of which cities have direct flights to/from Dubrovnik.

Do some searching on Kayak. I tried a few dates in May, Columbus to Dubrovnik, then Zagreb to Columbus on their multi-city option and came up with Air Canada/Lufthansa being the simplest, basically Columbus/Toronto/Frankfurt/Dubrovnik the Zagreb/Frankfurt/Toronto/Columbus on the way back. It would be unusual to do it in less transfers, since you will need to fly to a major hub in the US or Canada, then nearly always a stop in Europe before Croatia. other options involved Continental/Lufthansa, United, Swiss Air, really lots of options. Try playing with dates and even other airports if they work for you.

Kathy - We often take a nonstop into London and then catch flights to other places in Europe. So far we have flown from London to Prague, Dubrovnik, Istanbul, Rhodes, Athens, Madrid, Pisa, Rome, Amdsterdam, etc... easyJet, British Airways and others have cheap flights that can be purchased separately. We allow extra time for layovers but haven't had a problem since we started using London as a jumping off point in 2006. On the way back, we usually do stay in London for a couple of nights.

A method I use in this situation is to visit the airport website at issue (Dubrovnik) and examine arrivals and departures. You may be able to identify key airports in Europe that have acceptable connections for your trip. Perhaps a ticket with a major airline to a larger airport and a separate ticket involving a regional carrier for shorter hops. Happy travels.

I agree , Kathy, that this search is difficult. I 've been playing the "find a city" to connect to Dubrovnik for days....so far, the cost to get out of town is more than the flight to the continent! Searching now for a boat , train or combo route that does not require 20 hours. I tried all the airlines listed in the r.s. book, none flying in timely/resonable $ manner. Anyone have any better route or ideas how to get from Dubrovnik to Venice for the flight home to U.S.? thanks! CT

Dubrovnik seems well connected to Frankfurt, and there are many non-stops between Frankfurt and major US hubs. Seems like a much better connection than Venice. Have you investigated that?

Cyndi: There are many possibilities. I plunked in mid-week dates for July and found decent times/connections from Seattle to Venice, and return from Frankfurt for a touch over $1500. The Dubrovnik to Frankfurt leg can be booked directly with Croatia Airlines for just over $300. If you are not wedded to Venice, a round trip fare from Seattle to Zagreb can be had for a bit over $1600 and the one-way leg from Dubrovnik to Zagreb can be booked directly with Croatia Airlines for $57, although an overnight in pleasant Zagreb may be required.

Has anyone checked for flights on a site called CROATIA TRAVEL AGENCY or had any dealings with this agency?

Is it cheaper to book a flight from Zagreb to Dubrovnik from the states or once we get to Zagreb? i know the fare lists at about $57. Thanks.

Normally, airline ticket costs go up the closer you get to your departure date. So if you wait until you're in Zagreb to buy a ticket to Dubrovnik, I would expect it to be substantially more than $57, although I can't guarantee it.

You want cheaper than $57? Wow, you are a very budget-minded traveler. I would jump on the ticket right away. Yes, it does pin down a trip, but $57 is very inexpensive.

Hi Kathy I have to agree with Paul. If you can lock in a fare for $57.00 from Zagreb to Dubrovnik, I would do it within five minutes of reading Paul's post. I've traveled the 'hard way' by Tilting Train from Zagreb to Split and then by bus to Dubrovnik. This was very scenic but cost more in time and money than $57.00. Although I think a day or two in Split is very worthwhile too. I would always book long distance travel, whether by train or airplane in advance whenever you have a set destination in mind on a set date. When I lived in Munich, I would just show up at the airport and book a ticket to somewhere, wherever the great deals were that weekend, but your trip doesn't sound like that kind of trip. I have also flown British Air from Dubrovnik to London (Heathrow I believe). Try skyscanner.com for cheaper flights within Europe. Ross in Denver

I'm sure you probably booked your flight by now, but we flew west coast to Chicago to Dublin to Dubrovnik on Aer Lingus. Great flight!! And under $1000/person (1 way).

We took a local airline from Dubrovnik to Zagreb. Zagreb is better for international connections.
