How can I get a driver's permit prior to my arrival in country?
Go to your local AAA office and get an International Driving Permit. No test required. If you get in an accident and don't have one your insurance will be invalidated, you will be in trouble with the local police and you will have to come up with cash to pay for all damages before you'll be allowed to leave.
Thanks so much for the help!!!!
One last thing: don't rely on your existing insurance or the so-called Credit Card insurance coverage to do you any good in Greece. You need something they can process then and there in case of an accident. Take out the maximum coverage you can get from the rental agent.
In case you did not pick up on Kim's intent, It is your Michigan Drivers License that is valid in Greece and you will need in order to rent and drive a car. The International Drivers Permit is also required in addition to your Drivers License, it serves the dual purpose of indicating to Greek authorities that the little card you carry from Michigan is in fact a valid drivers license, plus it translates critical information so that you can be properly ticketed if need be.
