From Rovinj to Split

How long is the car drive from Rovinj, Istria to Split, Croatia? Are there wonderful sights to see or is it better to fly to Split and instead spend more time on the islands off the coast? Does anyone know where to rent a car in Rovinj or Pula? Thanks

The drive is 2 lane from Rovinj to Ucka Tunnel (near Rijeka) and then motorway until just before Split. I drove Split to Rovinj in 2008 and think it was at least 4 hours. If you want to make a full day of the drive, you could detour to Plitvice Lakes National Park on your way.

There are several car rental agencies in Pula, a few in town and several at the airport. The only agency I recall in Rovinj is Uniline (www.uniline.hr). You can rent from them directly, and I believe they also have some affiliation with other agencies. I rented from Uniline in 2008 and was happy with the experience. They also deliver the car during business hours like Enterprise does here.

We just returned to Canada after spending 6 weeks in Croatia and Slovenia - both lovely countries with lots to see but the local people made our vacation truly memorable. By nature, they are generous, considerate people. We have many examples of "acts of kindness" to us by total strangers.
We spent a week in Rovinj from where we toured to each of the small coastal towns along the west coast of the Istra and the hill towns of the peninsula. It was wonderful.

We rented a car from Sixt - after checking the internet for prices and locations for pick-up, drop-off, etc they provided the best prices and locations which suited our itinerary. We picked it up in Split and dropped it off in Opatija and there was no drop-off fee as long as pick-up/drop-off were in the same country. And taking it into Slovenia for our time in that country was no problem which some companies charge extra for. Also, when I called the agent in Opatija before confirming the rental, his advice was to book the car rental on-line for the best prices and to buy any additional insurance we wanted from the local agent when we picked up the car. I checked out both ways and his advice was accurate and resulted in sufficient savings for our overall rental. Also, for the price of a cup of coffee (paid directly to the local agent in Split), we were provided an upgrade in our car.

The day we arrived in Opatija to return the car it was raining heavily. A call from the hotel busboy had two agents over to the hotel within 15 minutes to pick-up the car and close off the rental agreement. The service was great from Sixt and we highly recommend the company.
