From Italy into Croatia

We are driving from Italy into Croatia and down to Dub. We will also cross the solvenian border. What restrictions can be expect at the various border crossings. I am sure we will be carrying some Italian wine and probably some cheese and sausage. Can we bring that across the borders? I have also seen some mention of a certain type of travel permit so I ask what should I be aware of to keep the authorities off our case? Thanks

For the record, you have to pass through Slovenia to get to Croatia, so count two border crossings there, and to get to Dubrovnik, you also need to pass through Bosnia-Herzegovina, another two crossings, all assuming you are using no ferries. The border crossings I experienced were primarily drive through passport checks, maybe presenting your car registration or rental documents, being looked over sternly by armed police, but no routine searches of bags and car trunks. I recall reading some info on Alcohol limits, but I think the intent is to control trade, not a few bottles for personal use. If it were me, I would not be concerned with transporting what amounts to a lunch. If you however are toting along several cases of wine, wheels of cheese, and half a hog...then you may raise some flags at a border crossing.

Reviewing my notes I think the permit I am talking about is the Slovenia Autoroad Permit. Where can you get one so that you will not get fined for driving without?

Howdy, Don't know what time of day you will hit Trieste on your journey. The square and old town surrounding it at very nice. And maybe the most photogenic church in my travels is up in the castle. They MUST have had professional lighting people set things up inside. The church is free to enter and the photos without flash are outstanding. wayne iNWI
