I will be traveling to Budapest next month for the first time (so excited) and it just happens to be during the Budapest food & wine festival at Buda castle. Has anyone attended previous food & wine festivals there? If so, any recommendations or advice?
Hi, Dawn. I thought someone would respond to you by now (James?) I have not been to the Festival, but I want to go!!! I looked on Tripadvisor and googled around. I did find lots of info and one positive review. The food & wine that we had in Budapest (this past May) was all very good so I can only imagine that this festival would be good, too, plus the location should be fun. If you go (and I hope that you will), please stop back and let us know your impressions. I have done nothing but talk about taking a wine tasting tour of Hungary since we got back.
I'm quiet because I am jealous. In ten years of trips to Budapest I have never been able to time it to be at the wine festival. The festival has a reputation of being one of the best of its kind in Europe. The evenings at the castle in Bud in the cool evenings should be spectacular. It runs pretty late in the evening so not having been there myself i would suggest that unless you want to walk home you remember that a lot of the transit system closes up around midnight and are replaced by the less glamorous night busses. This is a remarkably safe city even in the weeeee hours so don't fret about walking. What hotel are you staying at?
Thanks for your insight - we plan on attending a couple of the days and I will definately check out transit schedules before hand.
Hi Dawn, I spent three years living in Budapest and I can tell you that the Wine Festival is something that you will thoroughly enjoy! It goes on for 4 days, and the food and wines available are amazing. The cost is about $15 a person, per day, and this will include your wine glass, a carrying pouch for the glass, and admission to the museums in the Castle District as well. Various types of Hungarian foods are available to buy and there is also local music and entertainment. Once inside the Castle grounds, you can buy tasting tickets at any of the booths. You can buy one ticket for 100 HUF or Ten for 1000 HUF if my memory is correct. Some wines cost one ticket to taste, other may cost two or three tickets, depending on the wine. 1000 HUF is about $5 american. The only advice I can give you is that if you are using local transportation, keep in mind that the last bus down To Moskva Ter runs at 11 pm and the last tram leaves at midnight. The festival closes at 11 each night, but if you miss your bus, then you have to get a taxi or walk down the hill, and then go from there to your hotel.
Feel free to pm me if you have any other questions and enjoy your time in Budapest...you're going to love it!
