Food in Athens/Santorini

I just want to thank everyone here who takes the time to answer these questions! So my son and I will be in Greece pretty soon and I was wondering if there were any restaurants or a particular type of food/dessert, anything you guys could recommend for us to eat. Of course, I have done some research on Matt Barretts website, but I'd like some personal experiences from travelers on this forum. Thanks!

Of course, you have to try dolmades, stuffed grape leaves. Pretty much any lamb dish will be good. My wife and I really liked a restaurant in Athens, O Glykos. Click here for directions.

I loved Greece, but frankly most of the food was drenched in olive oil which grossed me out. I mean I would order a stuffed tomato or pepper and it would arrive but with oil drizzled all over it,, sorry, that is yuck to me.

What was good is Greek YOGURT, they know how to make the best yogurt ever, super creamy.
I ate alot of greek salad( sometimes called country salad or even house salad) tomatoes and cucumbers with olives and feta cheese.

Tzazki( spelt wrong sorry) yogurt and cucumber dill /mint type dip or spread. Served as a condiment with many dishes, but also served as an appetizer to dip pita bread in, very refreshing and tasty.
Hummous , chick pea dip.
Calimari,,octopus, deep fried usaully ( more oil) often served with tzaziki .
Moussaka, I hated this stuff but apparenly most people love it.
Baklava, loved this, flaky greek pastries made with filo pastry , honey and nuts,, delish.
Souvlaki( like shish kabobs) often lamb, sometimes good, sometimes not.

If you like spinach, try spanikopita. It seems that almost every restaurant I've ever eaten it in in Greece has made the crust differently--so it's always an adventure. I am also a big fan of a pastry called loukamades. If you eat meat (I am a vegetarian but grew up in a Greek family eating meat) and am a fan of macaroni and cheese, try pastitsio.

It's a country surrounded by water so try the fish and other seafood. I never knew what kind of fish it was, but it was always good as it was so fresh. I love Moussaka. I liked the salads. My friend and I had the greek salad--onions, tomatoes, cucumbers and feta cheese. Of course there was oregano and olive oil. The second time I went to Greece was in July and we ate outside for every meal. BTW you don't have to drink Retsina. There are plenty of non-resinated wines. The iced coffee was wonderful on a hot day.

These are old memories, but I suspect that they hold up.
