Flying from Istanbul to Athens

I'm hoping someone has this answer. This is a little hard to explain. I was able to book a free ticket from Athens to Los Angeles. However, I need to buy a connection ticket from Istanbul to Athens first. My flight leaves Athens at 12:00 if my plane arrives at 10:40 in Athens from Istanbul will that be enough time to catch this flight. Does one go through customs first? I could pay $100.00 more that would give me an extra hour. Should I not take a chance and just buy this ticket? Any ideas? Thanks for taking the time. Maybe one day I can answer someone's question.

Since you're flying on separate tickets, when you land in Athens you'll have to go through passport control, retrieve your checked bags at baggage claim, find and walk to the check-in line for your U.S.-bound flight, re-check your bags and get your boarding pass, go through a security line, and find and walk to your gate. It's doable in an hour and 20 minutes, but you will have 3 points in the process where you could run into long lines.

Personally, I'd pay the extra and get more time. Too many things can go wrong, and also, your flight in may be late.
