I am traveling in May/June '10 to Tuscany for 11 days and would like to spend some days in Dubrovnik. Any ideas for getting conveniently from Florence area to Dubrovnik?
Sounds like I should save Croatia for a separate trip. Thanks!
In past years, both Air Croatia and Air One have offered direct flights between Rome and Dubrovnik during high season. Neither flew daily, but sounds like a couple of days between flights would fit your schedule. Keep an eye out for flights and deals.
We are taking a similar trip at the same time this year and have been doing quite a bit of research - also have relatives on the ground in GE for added Europe travel help. Check the Jadrolinjia Ferry website, a bit cryptic but it has schedules and maps of ferry runs from IT to Croatia, one from Ancona to Split (looks like you can stay on from there all the way down to Dubro on certain sailing days) and another from Bari direct to Dubro (these are overnight boats, so you leave IT in the late PM and arrive in the early PM). Both ferrys require a lenghty train ride - check the trenitalia website, they'll let you enter departure and arrival cities and give you a run down of train schedule, travel times, transfers, etc. When reading schedules remember the day and month are switched so May 29 is 29.5. for example. Interestingly, my mother in GE went to a Croatian travel service that handles Jadrolinja last month and she was told that even they would not know the exact sailing sched. until a max. of three months prior to the sailing dates. But what is given is supposed to be close. BTW - if you find any good deals (<100 EUR) in Florence for B&B's please share, as well as anything else you find out. Happy researching. :)
