I have never been so frustrated in planning a trip. Is there a quick and/or easy way to get from Budapest to Split without flying to Austria?

Have you checked whichbudget.com and skyscanner.net? You could do it by train - change to a night train in Zagreb - but it takes forever.

Thanks for the tips. Can you recommend any tour group operators (other than Rick since he doesn't have a tour that fits our time frame). I've never done a "group" tour, but am considering doing so. Will be able to travel from 18-25 September along the Dalmation Coast. Can you suggest an itinerary? Thinking of Split, Hvar, Korcula, Mjilet, Dubrovnik. Flying out of Vienna. Any ideas and help will be appreciated.

You really don't need a tour for that - check out the ferry schedules at http://www.jadrolinija.hr/default.aspx?lang=2 and maybe supplement Rick's guidebook with Lonely Planet.
