Finding RS in Istanbul

Hi
I am on a journey through southern Europe, and I discovered Rick Steve's guidebook to Florence, Italy. Now I'm hooked. Unfortunately, Rick does not have most of the Balkans covered, so I missed him for that. Now I'm in Istanbul, and I am desperate to find a copy of Rick's guidebook to Istanbul. I've been to several bookshops near Sultan Ahmed, but they did not have it. Does anyone know where this can be found???

Thanks for the help,
Ben

This is from the Turkey Travel Planner website: These may be the shops you've already visited... "The most convenient English-language bookshop in Sultanahmet, Galeri Kayseri, is actually two shops almost across the street (Divan Yolu) from one another.

The older shop at No. 58 is a small place with a good selection of books in English on Istanbul, Turkey, their history, culture, arts and cuisine.

The new shop, Bookshop Istanbul, opened in September 2004, is at Divanyolu Caddesi No. 11, up the hill a bit on the opposite side of the street, between the Imar Bankasi and McDonald's.

Both shops are just uphill from the Sultanahmet tram stop on Divan Yolu."

I would be surprised if you found a RS guidebook in many places in Europe ... his stuff is mainly for US (west and Midwest) tastes, and the UK guidebook approach is more popular with other english-speakers. Look at ROUGH GUIDE: it gets high marks from guide-reviewers... I have found its Greece edition 2008 v. good. And it is much more widely distributed.

Hi Sharon,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, those are the shops I went to--didn't have it. Janet, I think you are right about Rick Steves in Europe. Too bad I guess. I will look around at some used book stores, and if I can't find it, just buy the Rough Guide.

If you want a quick peek at the book you could drop
into one of the hotels the tours use - the Best
Western Obelisk in Sultanhamet has a copy.

Hi Ben,

Hopefully you've found a copy by now, but if not; by doing some extra googling I found a couple of English book-selling stores in Istanbul that may have Rick's book:

Greenhouse Kitap
Dumlupinar Sok. No 17
Kadiköy, Istanbul, Turkey
Tel: +90 (216) 449 3034
Fax: +90 (216) 347 2902
-In Kadiköy on the Asian side of the Bosphorus in Istanbul

or:

Robinson Crusoe Kitabevi (Bookstore)
Istiklal Caddesi No 389, 34433 Beyoglu, Istanbul
Tel +90 212 293 6968
rob@tnn.net
-Not far from Galatasaray Square

I don't know much about the geography of the city so I put a brief description of the neighborhood.
Good luck! :D
