Finding an apartment in Istanbul

Hi, We're planning a 10-12 day visit to Istanbul this spring, probably at the end of April and/or the beginning of May. Any suggestions for finding an apartment in an area that is safe and interesting, with easy access to the rest of the city?
Thanks!

I stayed in Istanbul in 2011 for about 2 weeks as a single female traveler. I booked an apt through Booking.com at Sultanahmet Suites (http://www.sultanahmetsuites.com/english/) and I loved it. It was spacious, clean, neat, and had a kitchenette to store things from the market and was located in a local neighborhood within 5 min walk from all the action (shops, local stores, Blue Mosque, Aya Sofya, etc). You do have to be flexible as the local traffic on the narrow streets is a bit unnerving (and I did elect to pay in cash to get a $ 46 Euro/nigh rate, which was an incredible bargain at the time). I had no problems as a single woman walking to and from the apartment, but it was helpful to dress on the modest side to detract attention. Everything was close by (the tram was 10 min away, but with a little uphill walking). Keep in mind though that the apartments span 3 separate buildings which are within walking distance from one another.
