fill in the blanks on my eastern european trip, please!

We are flying into Budapest spending three nights. then going to Eger for one night. Then we have three open nights. Where should we spend those nights. And we end up in Krakow for three nights before we fly home. We are using train travel. Thank you very much for your suggestions.

Take a look at Warsaw. I think it's one of the great undiscovered (relatively) destinations in Europe. And it's an easy 2 1/2 hour train ride to Krakow.

Trains from Budapest to Krakow go through Slovakia and Czech Republic. You can get off in Bratislava and spend some time there. Or get off in Breclav (Czech Republic) and go to Valtice (about 10 minutes by train). Read about Valtice and Lednice in Rick Steves book Prague and the Czech Republic. If you are into wine check www.salonvin.cz It's in Valtice chateau. Another option would be to get off the train in Prerov and then visit Olomouc (about 15 minutes by train from Prerov). Nearby is also Kromeriz. You can read about both towns in R.S.book.

Try Kosice in Slovakia - a nice town/city in the Eastern part of the country. It is only about 2 - 2.5 hrs by train from Eger with one change of trains in Fuzebony(sp?). Spend 1 night there and then catch a direct train to Krakow.

The advantage of this is you don't have to backtrack from Eger to Budapest which may save you some time. Check out a lonely planet guide book to see if Kosice suits you since it isn't in the RS guidebooks.

Actually - relooking at Bahn it doesn't look like there is a direct train to Krakow - so this may not be the quickest way to Krakow. Nevertheless, Kosice ain't bad.

Relatively close to Krakow is Zakopane. We stayed there
in 2006 and greatly enjoyed it. Try the mountains above the city for a specialness. Recommend Dom Wycasovna

If you decide for Arnold suggestion of Kosice you can easily combine it with suggestion of Paul n Sara. From Kosice take a train direction to Prague or Bratislava and get off in Poprad-Tatry. Take a little electric train to Stary Smokovec which is in Tatra National Park. There is plenty of accommodation there. Next day you can take bus to Zakopane and next day by bus or train to Krakow. High Tatras (Vysoke Tatry) are magnificent very photogenic jagged peaks. If weather cooperates you won't regret doing it. If you are a hiker even better.
