I made plans to stay in Corfu in October, but now I'm finding that the ferries from Italy don't run very often after August. In fact, they may not run at all! Does anyone have info on this?

I would think that the ferries continue to run, you may not see schedules yet, but some schedule will occur. Try looking at a good guidebook (Lonely Planet?) they often do a good job of characterizing schedules. If all else fails, people get on and off the island somehow, the other way would be by air, maybe Aegean Air or Olympia Air offer good flights to Athens, then to Italy.

I honestly think it's just too early in the year for late-season ferry schedules to be published. Keep checking here: http://www.greekferries.gr
