We are a family of 4 , (2 kids 9 and 10) looking for info or recommendations on Croatia. Possibly taking a bus or train from Salzburg to Split. Any thoughts? Thanks
If your route takes you through Slovenia, you may want to consider a stop at Lake Bled--the kids may enjoy biking around the lake or rowing to the island, or visiting Vintgar Gorge. If you are not visiting any of the islands around Split, taking a ferry from Northern Croatia (or Zadar) to Split may be an option. Being on a boat will give you a different perspective and the kids won't have to be stuck in a seat for hours!
If you're not adverse to driving, consider renting a car in Zagreb for your travel in Croatia. That would give you more options, like stopping at Plitvice National Park for a night on the way to Split. You could also rent the car in Ljubljana and drive it into Croatia, but would need to return it to Slovenia to avoid a large drop off fee. I found that having a car on my Slovenia/Croatia trip was affordable and very convenient.
Joe: Train service from Salzburg to Split, forget it. If you only have 2 weeks, then make a decision as to Northern, Centrl or Souther Dalmatia. My favorite is southern, just because I am moving to Dubrovnik in January and will be offering daytrips around the area. You could fly into Split, and stay in Trogir and then take the ferry down to Korcula, then move over to the mainland to a village called Orebic. It is just wonderful small place, but if you are even thinking of going in August you had better start making reservations for places to stay immediately. Contact me with any other questions.
