We are an American family(kids age 3, 5, 6) who live in Vienna Austria. Next year we are considering a farm holiday in Slovenia or a beach holiday in Croatia. Can anyone recommend either a working farm(cows, chickens, cheese, etc) in Slovenia or a place in Croatia where the beaches are not too rocky and the town has something for everyone?
Your family might enjoy the Tourist Farm Hudicevic in Slovenia. The family that owns the farm has a number of children, including several about the same age as your three. There is a small playground and it is a working farm with animals. I'm not sure there is enough to do at the farm after you've explored for a day or two. With a car there are a number of child-friendly destinations within driving distance, including Ljubljana, the fishing town of Piran, the Roman ruins at Pula, Croatia, and the karst caves at Skocjan or Postojna. The Skocjan caves require a bit of walking and stair-climbing that may be too strenuous for smaller children. Anita

Hi Scott,
I loved visiting Ljubljana but didn't try a farm stay. I did save an article printed in Gourmet Magazine called "A Land in Between--Just over the Alps, in Slovenia, is the Europe You Thought has Disappeared" (October 2004) that described farm stays. They listed a website that might give you some ideas for farm visits--it's www.justslovenia.co.uk
Here's a good starting point, from the SLO Tourism board:
