Exiting cruise ship at Santorini

We are taking a 7 day cruise in October of 2014. The next to the last day of the cruise stops at Santorini at the Port of Skala. We are considering leaving the ship at Santorini since we were planning to visit Santorini after our cruise ended in Athens. It seemed silly to backtrack and we will be returning to Athens after visiting Santorini and another island for a few days. We want to stay in a hotel in Ola but realize that our tender boat takes us to Fira. Question: Is it possible to take the cable car up to Fila with luggage and acquire a taxi fairly easily? Thanks for any thoughts.

You can possibly do it one of 3 ways, depending on circumstances at the time. 1. There is a 'water taxi' from Skala to Amoudi Bay below Oia. The price of a ticket includes a shuttle van up the cliff into the village itself. 2. You can take the cable car up the cliff at Skala and perhaps pay a little more for your luggage. 3. You can pay a donkey man to take your luggage up the cliff and meet you at the cable car building. Once you get off the cable car it's not a far walk to the main road where you can flag down a taxi. #1 will only work if there are enough people who want the water taxi. I think it requires a minimum capacity of 15 before it will make the trip. Please don't ride the poor donkeys. Luggage is one thing but human passengers up all those steps is abuse. As you exit the cable car building turn left and walk to the end of that pedestrian lane, less than 50 yards. Turn right and immediately on the left you'll see a short flight of steps down to another lane. Ahead, about 100 yards, is the main road. Oia is uphill to the left about 6 miles. If for some reason you can't get a taxi to pick you up (unlikely) the taxi office is to the right downhill about 400 yards from where you come to the main road, straight ahead just past the main square where several outdoor cafes are situated side by side.

If you are leaving your cruise before the final destination, you have to notify the cruise line in advance. It's not hard, but do check their procedure.
