We'll be doing Budapest to Vienna, Vienna to Prague, Prague to Krakow and then an overnight from Krakow to Budapest. (Roundtrip airfare from NYC to Budapest is inexpensive now). Is the European East Rail Pass the way to go with this itinerary? We'll be travelling within a ten-day period. Another question. The last leg, Krakow to Budapest, has anybody travelled the night train on that route?
You need to check the prices online and compare. But each leg is pretty short so it is unlikely that a pass will be a good value. Plus the overnight will require a supplement fee.
Doug, I did what you suggested using that spreadsheet in Rick Steves' Eurorail Pass Guide and it comes out to this: For a five-day, first class pass, the cost is $320. The cost for the legs on my itinerary add up to $392. The supplements for night train travel are the same. Looks like the European East pass is the way to go.
