My husband and I are planning to rent a place in France as a "base of travel" for a year. We want to take several 2-3 day trips to other countries by motorcycle, has anyone else done anything like this before...any suggestions? Is this safe?

"My husband and I are planning to rent a place in France as a "base of travel" for a year." If the words "Schengen Treaty" do not ring a bell, look this up on Wikipedia. Unless you apply for an extended French visa, your time in most of Europe will be limited to 90 days in any 180 day period.

No, I don't have our long stay visa yet, we are still in the "planning" stages. We are still a couple years from doing this. Does it take long to get the visa and is it hard to get. I don't want to seem ignorant, I didn't realize there were restrictions on length of stay...lol. Thank You for your help.

tammy, I hope that some of the resident expats in France will chip in here. Yes, getting a long-term visa for France is no walk in the park.

Well, I'm up to it so I'll get started...I spent two weeks in France and London this past April and like many others I'm sure...I fell in love. I don't have the money to keep flying back and forth so my husband had the idea to spend a year on our motorcycle and by car just traveling around. Well it sounded good in theory...lol. So where would I start the process online? I have a lot of work to do but so excited at the same time. Thanks again...hope we can talk more.
