Ephesus and Istanbul - Words of Advice Needed to BuyTurkish Rugs

Is it possible to get good buys on Turkish rugs while in Ephesus or Istanbul? We normally purchase something that we can enjoy in our home and carry or have it shipped home. However, I don't know anything about buying Turkish rugs. Can someone advise me?

Charlene,
Buying a Turkish rug is an all day event. In order to buy one, you must first know what you want. They are many levels of quality and depending on how much you are willing to pay, will depend on what kind of rugs you can purchase. Fine area rugs, made from the best wool, are made from imported New Zealand wool, that has a high quality of lanolin, called Merino wool. Nations such as Pakistan, Iran (where Persian rungs come from), Irag, Afghanistan, and the rest of the 'stans, and Turkey all use some combination of wool, polyester, and silk. High quality wool, with lots of silk, and handmade will reflect light differently when viewed from different angles. To buy a run in Turkey can cost anywhere from $1,000.00-50,000.00 depending on the size and quality. Also, the buying of a rug takes most of the day in several stores--the earlier you arrive, the better price you'll get (vendors usually give the first customer of the day a discount, as they believe it will bring them luck)

They will also offer you an Apple chai tea, that is rude to not drink. They will lay out several carpets and you are to walk on them barefoot, and around them to view them from all angles. Google Turkish rugs and do research before you buy one, and always haggle for the price. Have fun!
